DIY

We’re all probably going a little stir crazy by now and the typical “quarantine” activities might be on repeat at this point.  If so, you’re in luck. We’ve come up with some ideas for home projects to keep yourself occupied with the extra down time you might have.

We have also linked materials and products from Amazon so that you can stay safe in your home and order them to be delivered to your doorstep!

#1: Create an accent wall the kids will be entertained by!

The two that come to mind for me are a lego wall or a magnet wall! They’ll spend hours letting their imaginations run wild and it will help fill the time during this quarantine.

  • For the lego wall, you’ll need:

    • Plywood

    • Lego plates

    • Caulk and caulking gun

    • Liquid nails

    • Wood trim

    • Legos, of course!

    • To learn how, check out this blog post from Renovated Learning

  • For the magnet wall: you’ll need:

    • Sheet metal

    • Cardboard

    • A hammer

    • Nails

    • Magnetic letters and numbers

#2: Paint a piece of furniture. We suggest black!

If you have a piece of furniture that’s been needing an update, now is the perfect time to get out that paintbrush! Dining chairs and dressers are the perfect pieces to paint. We always recommend painting black. Specifically, Benjamin Moore in Cheating Heart.

  • Note the tips:

    • Disassemble if you can

    • Always use a primer

    • You can probably get away with sample paint cans if the project is small enough

    • You’ll probably want to set up a workspace outdoors

#3: Plant a garden and or give your plants a little more care.

  • Take some time to plant a garden that might eventually save you trips to the grocery store!

  • Give them a little bit of extra attention! Now is the time to learn what your houseplants actually need… no more over or underwatering excuses! To read some tips on plant care, check out our recent Instagram post here.

#4: Update hardware.

Whether it’s in your cabinetry or a dresser, this quick and easy project can make a jaw dropping change! We’ve been loving gold hardware lately.

#5: Wallpaper a wall.

Wallpaper is back and it looks amazing as an accent wall in a bedroom, bathroom, entryway or pantry.

#6: Organize!

First, start by purging. Go through that junk drawer, closet, skincare and makeup products and throw out everything that you don’t need. Then, get to organizing! Think about filling spaces vertically so you save on space. For example, use tall containers to store pasta and cereal in your pantry as opposed to shorter, square containers.

  • If you’re local to Arizona, Ashley from OCDAZ is a GREAT resource for organizational tips! She is giving so many amazing tips for how to organize your spaces. She did some organizing in our home and it changed my life! Check out her Instagram @ocdaz.

#7: Switch out light fixtures.

  1. Another easy update that makes a big difference! Whether it be sconces, pendants or a chandelier, updating existing lighting with beautiful, sleek statement pieces can really brighten up a room!

#8: Touch-up!

Do you have some areas on your walls that need to be patched or repainted? Now is a great time to scan the entire house and make these little fixes that make your home look clean.  Our hallway as well as the trim work around doorways always takes the biggest beating in our home! Just remember to make sure your paint sheen matches!!!

#9: Rearrange your furniture.

Rally the whole family to pitch in and move some furniture around to change it up! Oftentimes, you might not have thought of the best way to maximize a space; now is a great time to analyze the flow of your room and furniture placement.  Growing up I rearranged my bedroom ALL THE TIME (and probably drove my parents crazy doing this). Have some fun with it and know that you can always move it back!

#10: Hang pictures or art.

Typically, these are the types of projects we put off, even on the weekends when we let the kids’ activities take over. Now is the perfect time to block out 25 minutes to hang up photos you’ve always wanted on display or beautiful art and prints you’ve purchased that have just been sitting in storage.

#11: Spruce up your table setting by creating a centerpiece with greens from your yard.

How special is that! If there is anything good we can take out of our situation, it’s that we have more time with family. Now is the time to take these family dinners to the next level.
