Behind The Design: House of Lu

Welcome back to the Lexi Grace Design blog!

Today, let’s take a peek inside a very fun project we titled, House of Lu (our client’s Instagram handle). This is the personal home of our client, Uyen, and her adorable family. Uyen needed some help getting her home photoshoot ready for a feature that was being done on her.  She is an amazing creative entrepreneur who owns a kids clothing company (@crewandlu) and also a baby products line (@shopclaay).  She had recently renovated their farmhouse but hadn’t finished the interior furnishings.  We were super excited to assist her with this as she is just as fun in real life as she is on her IG @house_of_lu.  Using pieces Uyen already owned and bringing in some of our own art, accessories and furniture, we were able to style her space and keep it a true reflection of Uyen and her family.

Introduce yourself - who are you, where are you from, and what’s your story?

I'm Uyen Carlson and I reside in Gilbert, Arizona. I have three kids and am currently pregnant with our fourth child due in September. My husband is a firefighter and we are both are natives of Arizona. We found our property four years ago and fell in love with our project. A mini modern farm we call it... we have an acre with two pups, two goats and chickens.

Tell us a little bit about your project.

Our home has been and still is a work of love. We renovated the kitchen, all the bathrooms, and laundry room before we moved in and now slowly updating the rest of our home as we go. Renovations can be so costly, therefore it's taken more time than we'd like. But we love seeing the progress as it goes. We have since added a loft space and built a studio barn on our property. It's been such a joy to see everything come together.

Why did you choose LGD?

We have used Lexi and her team for some staging in our home in the past and have loved working with her so much. She has such a keen eye for design. Very clean and a classic timeless look.

What were your expectations going into the project? What were your wants, needs and goals for the space?

I shared with Lexi my personal taste and idea of what I'd like for the space and she was able to take my intital thoughts and bring it to a whole new level. It so fun to see her work and show her craft.

Share a little bit about what the design process was like.

Communication was key for both of us. Trying to convey the overall feeling is what I wanted to come across. The feeling of our home was so important to me.

What advice would you give to those who are considering hiring an interior designer?

My advice when considering an interior designer is look at their previous work. If you are drawn to their portfolio, it will be a flawless collaboration. Knowing their style up front is so important... you can't expect them to master a completely different look in your mind if it's not their aesthetic. Be honest with budgets and expecations. That always helps too.
